Coaches Corner: Welcome to the Hammerheads!

Cold water and gloomy weather, we made it through week one and we are SO excited to swim with you this season. We will keep you updated on what we are working on and our swimming philosophy via a Coaches Corner message, every couple of weeks. 

I had a parent remind me on the 1st day of practice of a lesson I had with her baby , that is now on the swim team. She told me her first words were “ I can do it!!!” This statement came from her success swimming on her own the first times.

This delight, confidence and most important , memory is what we want your swimmers to take away from their swim season with the Hammerheads.

The coaches will work with your swimmers to not only to swim better, but know why they are swimming better. The first couple of weeks we will be working on stroke, comfort and balance. We may be doing this in a way that may be unfamiliar to you. Please trust us to guide your swimmer to being stronger and a better swimmer. Please avoid correcting your swimmers during or after swimming.

Please do not utter the following:

1. Big arms

2. Big kicks

3. Side breathing

4. Stream line

5. Dive

A few things that you can do to help your swimmer be great:

1. Make sure they have properly fitted suit, goggles and cap. Long sleeved suits do not help them swim or keep them warm.

2. Get them to as many practices and meets possible

3. Give them positive feedback after and before practice. The coaches will handle the corrective feedback

4. Ask them about practice. Ask them to describe what they learned or experienced.

5. Respect the process!
